There is more to seen Luang Namtha than your guide book may tell you. From our lodge you can discover the nature and peoples of Luang Namtha through our partner company who are are working hard to make their programs a model for community-based ecotourism.

Luang Namtha has a large and diverse ethnic groups many of whom still live traditional life styles. The main ethnic groups in the area are Tai Yuan, Black Red and White Tai, Tai Lue, Khmu, Rok, Akha, Lanten, Mien and Hmong. Most of the ethnic handicraft traditions are alive and well, and can be seen.

The money from your tours not only benefits the villagers, it also goes to strenthen the management of the Nam Ha National Protected Area, 222,400 hectares of land ranging from the lowlands of the Luang Namtha Plain to 2,000m peaks. With a broad range in altitude, Nam Ha Protected Area supports a wide variety of flora (including primary tropical forest) and fauna.

The area is a haven for naturalists, birdwatchers and outdoor enthusiasts. Large mammal species include the clouded leopard, leopard and tiger, and a small population of Asian Elephants, and over 280 species of bird have been reported by villagers, including nationally important populations of Silver Pheasant, a healthy population of Blyth's Kingfisher, several south-east Asian highland species found in few other places in northern Laos (e.g. Whiskered Yuhina, Ashy-throated Warbler, Green-tailed Sunbird), and the first recent sightings of the Crimson-breasted Woodpecker in Lao.

how this holiday makes a difference
We have a donation box for the local school, support activities on Arbor and International Children's day, work in close cooperation with the UNESCO funded Ecotourism Project, and encourage the local community to preserve local ways and handicrafts.

We support the planting of trees on Arbor day, make fertilzer from organic waste, recycle solid waste when possible and use solar power for heating water and lighting.

We work with the local government to protect the fishing areas in the river near the guest house and provide educational materials to raise the awareness of the tourists and local community about environmental conservation. The area surrounding the lodge is a wildlife reserve.

All our employees are from the local community and we purchase the bulk of goods and services locally. We help local entreprenuers (e.g. taxi drivers and boatmen) and they benefit from customers frequenting our establishment.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
