description
This eco-cabin provides environmentally responsible self-catering accommodation in the Shropshire Hills – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This accommodation offers the perfect opportunity to escape from it all whatever the season and you might just want to remain in Obley for the whole of your stay.

In warm weather you can relax on the verandah with a glass of local wine or cider listening to the calls of the curlews and buzzards. In colder weather snuggle up in front of the wood pellet stove and wind up the radio or choose a book from the eclectic ecocabin library.

A stay here is a truly unique experience that will capture the very essence of the South Shropshire Hills and help protect its beautiful countryside for the future.
special things to do and see here

Biking accommodation: We collaborate with a local cycle hire company and can arrange for bicycles to be available for you to use during your stay (details and prices on application). There are miles of country lanes to enjoy and the Hopton Castle and Black Hill forest tracks are just a 10 minute ride away.

Shropshire countryside, Shropshire self catering accommodationWalking accommodation: The cabin is secluded by at least 4 miles of single track lanes in every direction. You can walk direct from the door all day every day for a week along paths, brideways and forestry tracks and perhaps not see another person. But if you prefer to explore a little further afield then the well signposted long distance footpaths of Offa's Dyke (5 miles) Glyndwr's Way (6 miles) and The Shropshire Way (4 miles) pass nearby. The Heart of Wales line has stations at Bucknell and Hopton Heath (both about 4 miles) and this can take you deeper into Mid Wales.

Leaflets on train rambles and circular walks from small stations along the way are available from the local Tourist Information Centres. Other favourite destinations for walkers are the Long Mynd and the Stiper Stones, both only half an hour's drive away. There is a comprehensive selection of maps and walking guides available to guests, including laminated sections of the immediate surrounding area.
travellers' tales
The accommodation was comfortable, beautifully decorated, situated in the prettiest countryside. We thoroughly enjoyed cycling in the lanes, there was good walking and some great mountain biking too. (more)

  • how this holiday makes a difference
From concept to completion we have followed the principles of ecological building design and construction, use of renewable energy resources, ethical business practice, supporting the local economy, promotion and protection of the surrounding countryside and minimising waste by recycling

The design of the building offers luxurious simplicity and successfully combines traditional practicality with technical innovation. The frame of the building is constructed of local Douglas Fir and insulated with British sheep’s wool. The external walls are homegrown Larch and the internal walls are lined with reedboard and then limeplastered. The floors are finished in native Ash.

Almost all building materials, labour, furnishings and finishings have been sourced locally. Environmentally friendly paints, natural wood finishes, organic fabrics, towels and bed linen and natural dyes and pigments have been used to create a healthy and chemical-free living space. Many furnishings are recycled or reclaimed materials e.g. the kitchen work surfaces are made from yoghurt pots. We buy through a local shopping service and an organic/local produce shop.

Shropshire countryside, Shropshire self catering accommodationSolar energy provides hot water and the cabin is heated by a wood pellet stove. Used widely in Canada and Europe wood pellet stoves are at the forefront of clean convenient eco-technology and this is one of the first to be fitted in the UK. The cabin is connected to the national grid via renewable electricity supplier Good Energy and all appliances and lighting have been chosen for their energy efficiency. All recyclable materials (glass, tins and plastics) are collected and there is a worm assisted composting system for biodegradable waste.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
