description
We are situated just 5 minutes walk from the centre of Brecon, right in the middle of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Brecon is a market town with all the basics, plus an amazing Jazz festival in August. The rest of the year it is ideal for walking the Beacons and Black Mountains or riding some of the best mountain bike trails in the UK.
Our accommodation is not fancy but we have comfy beds, proper down duvets and pillows, and plenty of hot water. Our cafe serves home cooked food most days, using seasonal, local and organic ingredients where possible.
In the evening guests can use the café for relaxing, playing games etc. We have sofas by the log fire, books and magazines to read and a fully licensed bar. Takeaway meals are also available from the café.
We both had a dream about running some sort of lodge/chalet for mountainbikers for a long time. We have tried to offer the sort of place we would have wanted to find, for a snack, a meal, or a long weekend.
We are in one of the best areas for mountain biking and hill walking in the UK with the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and Fforest Fawr within 10 miles. The Cambrian Mountains and some of the least explored parts of Wales, are about 40 minutes drive away. We can advise on routes and the best picnic spots!
We have several hundred kms of routes from the door including the famous "gap" route, Sarn Helen (an old stony Roman road), and the start or finish of the Taff Trail, 50 miles from Cardiff. You can also continue on the Lon Las Cymru, the trans Wales Sustrans cycle route, through the Cambrians and on to Snowdonia.
Biking accommodation: We have secure bike storage and can arrange bike rental. We can supply routes, maps and guide books for local trails and can provide packed lunches/thermoses. There is a hose and drying space for gear.
Walking accommodation: We can supply routes, maps and guide books for local trails and can provide packed lunches/thermoses. Guided walks are on offer from the National Park on Sundays.
You can also kayak on the River Wye and fish for trout and salmon on the Usk.

travellers' tales
The most memorable part was getting to the top of the mountain to see the amazing views and feeling very proud that despite bike injuries (minor) I made it to the top! (more)
rooms, food and facilities
We have two double rooms and one twin room, designed to be simple in décor but provide quality where it matters. We have good mattresses, down pillows and duvets, and Egyptian cotton bedlinen. Bedroom 1 is at the front, a large room with a double bed and a folding quality single bed. It also has a sofa and radio/CD player. It has a private bathroom next door with a powerful shower, washbasin and toilet. Bedroom 2 has a double bed and a washbasin and CD player/radio. Bathroom 2 (shared with room 3) has a powerful shower and full bath, as well as plenty of drying space.
Bedroom 3 at the back of the house has two single beds, and shares bathroom 2. For families, rooms 2 and 3 hired together are a good option as they are next door and share the bathroom between them.
Family friendly: Bedroom 1 can be let as a family room, for a couple and up to 1 small child (£55) as there is just room for a folding bed. Larger families, or those with older children can rent rooms 2 and 3 for £90, or all three rooms for £130 per night.
We have toys and books for children in the café and a highchair. We can offer routes for family cycle rides, and can help arrange trailer bikes and children's bikes locally.Baby friendly: We have a high chair, and some baby books and toys in the café. We don’t charge for babies sharing a room with adults. (Please bring your own baby bedding and travel cot at no extra charge).
Please note that our accommodation is all non smoking.

how this holiday makes a difference
We promote staying in the area to cycle and walk, rather than just passing through. All food and drink in the café is from local suppliers, and mostly organic. We use about 75% organic ingredients, Welsh where possible. Our meat and free range eggs come from local farms, vegetables are approximately 80% organic and we use 100% organic Welsh milk. We promote Brecon ales and Penderyn whisky both from the National Park. We only use recycled office paper, loo paper, and kitchen towel. We minimise energy use and waste by careful planning (e.g. cooking to order, organic waste is composted or fed to the birds) and recycling. We produce a maximum of 2 black bags of waste a week - considering we do about 100 lunches and have an average of 10 people staying per week, we think this is pretty impressive! |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
