description
Our family’s "mountain retreat" is situated in a peaceful scattering of villas, surrounded by pine and chestnut forest. Located in lower Val Chisone, between Turin (Torino) and Briancon, France. We make a welcome stop for those travelling between France and Italy. Even better to stay for a longer break and explore the area’s many culinary, cultural, historical, and sporting opportunities close at hand.
We are an excellent 'off the beaten path' choice for walking, cycling, climbing, and simply relaxing whilst savoring our northern Italian gastronomy and restorative mountain ambience.
Step out into the fresh mountain air and luxuriate in the tranquility and panoramic views. Our location makes it easy to sample both alpine and city offerings, balancing complete independence and feeling like part of the family. You’ll run out of time before you run out of things to see and do.
We created the Sustainable Mountain Tourism Association, to be able to showcase what this area has to offer, deepening the range of activities, attracting more visitors and creating more opportunity though out our valley community and Piedmont in general. In collaboration with the association, we offer cooking and wine courses, featuring locally sourced northern Piedmontese specialties. Other meals may be arranged, sharing an evening meal, in our home, family style, sometimes with other houseguests that might be joining us for the evening. As former professional chefs, we are comfortable catering to special diets like vegetarians and vegans and we are a registered accommodation with the Italian Celiac association.
We offer:

Affordable accommodation, in a tranquil romantic mountain setting; spectacular views. Excellent walking, biking and climbing country with many species of flora and fauna. Close to 3 regional nature parks. Excellent base for city (Turin) or mountain exploration; cultural, culinary, or sporting. Possibility of mountain bike rental. Free access to wireless internet connection. Fresh, locally sourced and home produced food, drawing on local traditions. Memorable meals and special diets catered for upon arrangement. We organise wine tasting and our very popular 'cooking together' seminars. Personalised, friendly service tailored to your needs.
Whether you’re sports minded or wanting to experience the flavor of this part of Piedmont’s Italian Alps; why not make our home your base?

travellers' tales
A fabulous holiday and all down to the great hospitality provided by Marla and Fabrizio. I rate it as one of the best places I've ever stayed in and hope that I will be lucky enough to return sometime soon. (more)

Attractions (under an hour's drive away): Walking
Situated at 1,100m (3,280ft) our location is one of best assets making access to walking as easy as stepping out your door. There are a variety of trails to explore up to Cucetto peak and beyond to Merla or Aquila peaks. You can head down to the Dubbione river circling back up to us via Grandubbione with its characteristic and charming mountain dwellings, which now are mostly holiday homes. You have a several choices for all weather conditions and levels of ability without getting into your car.
However, it is possible to explore further a field with the independence of a car to sample some of the higher mountains in the parks and more remote past of Val Germanasca and Chisone. You will find many opportunities for circular day hikes of variable grade, with good accessibility by car. Springtime is excellent for viewing the progression of alpine wildflowers, starting with narcissus, gentians, and orchids, followed by the summers’ profusion of variety and color. Generally, it is not too hot to hike throughout the summer months. Autumn of course is a very pleasant time for walking and there is the possibility of finding edible mushrooms, in particular, the much-prized porcino or boletus edulis.
Your morning wake up call by the many local species of birds is a pleasant start to your day with the possibility of eagle, deer, chamois, and possibly even wild boar sightings. You will find many interesting old villages and architecture along the way in your discovery of our Cottian Alps. We are able to advise for local walks and other pertinent information. Free local walking path leaflet and local maps available for purchase.
Biking
Aside from the obvious natural beauty of the Cozie Alps, our location makes cycling and mountain biking accessible as soon as you step out your door. However, it is possible to explore further a field with the independence of a car or riding to the bottom of our road and catching the bus with your bike to other points. For an additional fee the bus company will transport your bike underneath the bus to your destination. You will find many opportunities for circular day rides of variable grade. Our rural surroundings make for a pleasant and challenging outing. There is a rich history through out this region and you will find many interesting old villages and architecture along the way in your discovery of our “Waldensens” valleys and Olympic Mountains.
Free local mountain biking trails leaflet and local maps available for purchase. We have secure covered storage. In association with CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) we can arrange certified local mountain bike guiding. Mountain bike rental available, also.

how this holiday makes a difference

Our commitment to encouraging and keeping our environment clean and green is expressed by a variety of practices that we follow here.
We use long life, energy efficient bulbs and all toilets are equipped with low usage water pumps. Our contact gas 'on demand' heater cuts down our fuel consumption when we aren’t fully occupied. We heat with wood that we cut from our own land using sound timber management to maintain a healthy and vigorous forest for our long term use and future use as well. Our family had been managing this land for over 3 generations. We will change your towels once during a 5 day stay or longer and sheets after a week's stay. We shop and source our food as locally as we are able, use organics when possible and encourage our guests to patronise our local markets and restaurants. We have a three bin recycling container located at the top of the stairs where you may deposit aluminum, glass and plastic. We are able to use your old newspapers for fire building in the winter. We are working with the local authorities to bring glass and plastic recycling to our neighborhood. Your patronage helps us convince them that there is a need for these services. Social and economic responsibility We are a small family run business in a small mountain community. Our area is rich in history and high in unemployment. We have been able to bring more people to this area through our ability to speak other languages and reach a broader market on the web. As our business grows we are able to generate more business and support for other local businesses. Our Sustainable Mountain Tourism association grew out of our desire to include small businesses, organic food producers and artisans that strive to preserve and enhance rural community life. We have a couple of neighboring restaurants, serving local products, a wonderful museum at the bottom of our road that collects and preserves old local heirlooms, preserving them for future generations. We support small cheese makers; vintners and liqueur producers that still pay mountain residents to not only gather necessary herbs, but to protect the natural habitat as well. We use and promote ecologically sound practices within our business and with others with whom we collaborate. We are always looking to increase and improve our green practices, leading by example. We sell and promote a small selection of local liqueurs, wines, watercolours, Waldensen painted stones and leather key chains all made by local artisans and associates. Through our collective effort we strive to build a healthy community through sound economic and ecological practices. Your visit helps us take another step along that path. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
