description
Our Amazon eco lodge is built on a 200 hectare private reserve on the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve.
It is becoming integrated with the communities of Brazil nut extractors that surround it, attempting to extend the benefits of ecotourism to the families that commit to the sustainable use of the forest within this buffer zone.
It is ideal for three night outings because it takes over three hours to get here from Puerto Maldonado and most of your first afternoon is spent on the river. Therefore, you should spend at least three nights here to have time to fully explore the surrounding primary forest.
This travel time is more than compensated by increased possibilities to encounter wildlife (the further form Puerto Maldonado, the less people there are, the less pressure on wildlife there is). There are also plenty of activities on offer (see below), including an authentic Brazil nut trail and camp.
For those traveling with children it offers the only attraction especialy made for children, by children, in the Peruvian Amazon - the Children's Rainforest Trail.
Canopy tower Brazil nut trail and camp Oxbow lake and farm visits Parrot clay lick or mammal clay lick Caiman search Kayaking and canopy climbing and fishing Activities for families Biking to Puerto Maldonado (see below)
Cycling accommodation: Join our biking to Puerto Maldonado activity. A very early wake up and boat drive downriver will have us at the Tambopata River Port ready to return to Puerto Maldonado on bike.
The 20 kilometer road has some short slopes and presents little technical difficulty, but it will be hot and sweaty. A shower will await you in town. This activity is always subject to airline departure times. After the ride we head back to the airport.

rooms, food and facilities
A charming 24 bedroom Amazon eco lodge, well placed immediately adjacent to the Tambopata National Reserve.
Our lodge is built using a combination of traditional native materials (wood, palm fronds, wild cane and clay) and architecture and modern day eco-lodge technology. It consists of three wings of 8 rooms connected by raised boardwalks to a central, two story, 20 foot tall common area. This area has distinct ambiences serving as lobby, dining room, bar, shop and lounge.
This structure is the heart of the lodge's atmosphere: it provides great canopy views of the surrounding forest – from a hammock... and a whistle away from a drink!
The entire roof of the lodge is constructed using high quality crisneja palm fronds, whereas the floors are of tropical mahogany. The rooms complex is built of three 32 meter long structures with eight rooms per facility, for a total of 24 double bedrooms.
The rooms are 7 x 4 meters so they can comfortably hold three beds, although most are set up for two. The walls dividing each room are built using cane, and extend from the floor to about 2.5 meters height making each room private.
The side that looks out to the forest does not have a wall or screening of any kind, acting as a large window facing the forest. The reason we have been able to incorporate this "luxurious" design into our lodge is because mosquitoes are not really a problem around the lodge clearing and the open section allows for an intimate contact with the rain forest.
A second small window on the opposite side, set up very high, keeps the rooms well ventilated. Doors are replaced with drapes. Rooms are not soundproof.
Each room has a private bathroom with cold water only. Rooms and bathrooms are separated by drapes. Each room has beds, mosquito nets, bedside tables and hammocks or lounge chairs.
Family friendly: For those travelling with children we offer the only attraction especialy made for children, by children, in the Peruvian Amazon - the Children's Rainforest Trail. The rooms are 7 x 4 meters so they can comfortably hold three beds, although most are set up for two.
To get here you must fly to Puerto Maldonado from Lima or Cuzco on one of the daily commercial flights lasting 30 or 90 minutes respectively. From the airport you are then transported by truck to the infiermo River Port where you board our boats for the two and half hour trip to the lodge, which is located ten minutes walk from the river.
For those travelling to travel to Tambopata Research Center, this makes a good stopping point as we are only 2 hours from Tambopata Research Center.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
Work at our Amazon eco lodge has just begun. Lodge construction was completed in May 2006. Since our establishment in the small 200 hectare private reserve we have come to understand the role we need to play in the locality. We are ideally positioned to directly influence the long term health of the 250,000 hectare Tambopata National Reserve. It lies 20 kilometers from the Interoceanic Highway, on the opposite side of the Tambopata River. In a decade, human encroachment can be expected to have reached the banks opposite our lodge. Therefore the lodge and its area of influence need to act as an effective buffer between this belt of development and the Tambopata National Reserve behind us.
To that extent, we plan to establish alliances with neighboring families in much the same manner as we have in other lodges. In exchange for connecting with the benefits of ecotourism via employment and supplier development we will ask for certain agreements in the use of resources. For example, in our first winter there, we have asked the neighbouring Brazil Nut concessionaries to refrain from hunting in their concession. This, of course, costs them, because they obtain their protein from the hunted meat. So they are compensated in beef. So as to not create a paternalistic relationship, we have asked that the beef be paid in exchange for hosting groups during our visits to the Brazil Nut farms. We plan to expand this kind of arrangement to the 100 or so families that live in the communities of LaTorre, Baltimore, Sachavayoc and Condenado. This would mean we would have established relationships with all families along the Tambopata River, beginning in the northernmost limit of Infierno and ending in the Tambopata National Reserve’s Guardpost to the south. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
