"Venturing to a rural medieval village where you can explore a snow covered fairytale land of mountains, caves and forests sounds great. My ideal day here would be to sledge down to a volcanic lake and then warm up in the cosy Transylvanian guesthouse with wines and traditional food."

description
A Transylvania holiday to remember. Located in Miclosoara, a remote little village in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains. The Count's guesthouses date back to the 1800s, although parts of them are much older as some medieval shooting embrasures reveal. They have been extensively restored to regain their old charm and character.
Our family has returned to its origins in Transylvania after 50 years of exile, 4 years of hard work have been invested since then. Through a wide range of restoration activities the Kálnoky family contributes now in a representative way to the preservation of Transylvania's heritage. Visit us in this unknown, fairy-tale land in the center of Europe.
Transylvania is surrounded by a mighty range of the Carpathian mountains. We invite you to discover Transylvania as our grand- and great-grand parents knew it in the 1800's. Transylvania became famous not only due to the fiction of Count "Dracula", but also through the history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the unique medieval villages and the excellent Romanian wines.
Winter is the most beautiful season in our village. It usually lasts from the end of October to the beginning of April. You not only feel to have been transferred into a fairytale, but also have the impression of time standing still. But don’t worry, we’ll keep you active!
Skiing: During the day you can ski at Poiana Brasov resort. It is at little more than one hour’s drive, situated at 1900 m altitude with 13 trails in all range of difficulties, an average annual snowfall of 70 cm, 8 drag lifts , 3 cable car, 1 skating yard, 2 sledge piste. The longest slope is 3.8 km long. In the evening you will return to our cozy village.
Tracking in the wild: After snowfall our wildlife guide will let you discover the traces of all large and small carnivores and mammals and observe birds you might not see in other parts of Europe
Horse-sleigh riding: We have several sleighs in our village. You will be taken for a ride equipped with a fur blanket and muffs for your hands. Our guests often see deer and other animals during their ride.
The ice gorge and cave: You can cross the river on the ice to reach the Pied Piper’s cave. In it’s entrance hall hundreds of man-high stalagmites of ice are growing, resembling transparent-blue shapes of children.
Snow-shoeing: We usually have such heavy snow, that hiking becomes impossible during winter. Our snow-shoes will help you discover our fairy tale landscape and wilderness.
Bird-ringing: Bird-ringing of wintering birds at feeding places.
Culture: And, of course, all of our cultural sites can also be visited in winter. Our vehicles are well equipped for winter conditions.

travellers' tales
A real adventure! Transylvania in the snow is a magical place, and I can't wait to return in the summer some time. We were looking for some festive snow and were so glad to stumble across this on the responsible travel website. (more)
rooms, food and facilities
The guestrooms are furnished exclusively with antique Transylvanian furniture. We have taken particular care in making beds and seats comfortable, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. All rooms have double beds with specially manufactured mattresses of pure wool and duvet covers. Each room has its own electric kettle, with both tea and coffee provided. Comfort is a priority, and we have paid particular attention to bathrooms and by building a sauna. The heating system is also original and based on wood-stoves.
Breakfast is served in a picturesque kitchen. Lunch and dinner can be served either in the dining room, under the arbors in the garden or in the wine cellar. We have extra living rooms and a billiard-room for bad weather or calm hours. You can enjoy vintage liquors and fine books in comfortable armchairs in front of the fireplace (and a satellite-TV set is also accessible if you really can't do without it!).
Our cuisine is mainly based on products from our garden or produced in the village. The bread is fresh from the oven. We do not use pesticides or chemical products. Our menus also contain local dishes, which we feel you will be pleased to discover. You will often have picnics during your trips and a rich dinner in the evenings. The meat and milk comes mainly from animals raised in the village and on its pastures.
Baby friendly:
We provide baby cot for families arriving with baby, and we also place a baby bathtub in the room to the baby and mother's convenience. We also have baby sitting service, in case families with little children require it. In the courtyard of our main guesthouse we have a playground with swing and sandbox for the children. It is convenient for the parents, too, because they can have an eye on their children while relaxing in the courtyard and garden. We organize trips, which suit younger children's pace and patience. There are horse pulled cart rides, that children especially enjoy, they can also enjoy the closeness of nature, farm animals and wild animals in the area, which could be a unique experience for "city-children".
how this holiday makes a difference
Our small enterprise provides employment for 14 families. Most of the food we serve as well as the building material we use is traditionally produced in the village and its surroundings. Our staff is now skilled in their new professions, be it the cook, the guide or the restoration worker. We aim at restoring and preserving the historic architectural harmony of our village and its environment. The guest houses are part of the village and our guests become neighbours to the villagers for the length of their stay. We show our guests nature still in its unspoiled way. We monitor wildlife around the village and make the villagers understand why it is so important to preserve it. We promote sustainable tourism also by limiting the amount of rooms available. All our employees are local and benefit from high training standards. We purchase most goods locally, even traditional building materials like hand made tiles, bricks and lime. Our taxes go to the local council helping to develop the village. Profit generated by the guests is re-invested directly in the restoration of our cultural heritage. Thus the entire village largely benefits from our undertaking. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
