special things to do and see at our retreat in Croatia
Walking Pack a rucksack with lunch and stroll through the countryside from one tiny village to another, up and down hills and through woodlands and vineyards. We are situated in the heart of agricultural land, walk through our gate and you are immediately on a farm track, follow it to the next village where there is a small goat farm, walk on through unspoilt countryside and spend time sitting, uninterrupted enjoying your picnic in complete solitude. Alternatively, we can drop you off at one of many seaside walks where you can explore the rugged coastline or at a route along the winding banks of the river Mirna. Spend time exploring the cobbled streets of old Venetian towns or the old town of Porec. We can also take you on a day trip to the Ucka Nature Park, set in the Ucka mountain range which separates Istria from the rest of Croatia, where you can wander to your hearts content. A wide variety of birds, insects, fauna and flora and small mammals reside there, and you may even be lucky enough to spot a brown bear.
Cycling Cycling is very popular in Istria, many Europeans travel here in summer specifically to cycle, and there are numerous designated signposted routes you can choose to follow. However, we prefer to keep away from the roads, and so we have mountain bikes for your use, follow the farm tracks and lanes, you can cycle through local woods and vineyards from one village to another, take time to stop at one of many small restaurants (konobas) for lunch in the garden and enjoy Croatia’s friendly hospitality.
Istrian cuisine experience We have become very integrated with our neighbours who grow most of their own ‘organic’ food and produce wonderful organic wine. We can now offer a true Istrian experience in local homes with a meal and wine including a tour of their wine cellars and small holdings.Plitvice Lakes day trip Amongst our sight seeing trips we offer a trip to the amazing Plitvice Lakes know as the “heavenly gardens of Europe” included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in 1979. Plitvice is a series of 16 lakes interlinked with cascading pale blue water and waterfalls; it is also a nature park with many species of flora and fauna. This is a unique and unforgettable day out.

how this holiday makes a difference
At our retreat in Croatia we compost all fruit and vegetable waste and feed other food waste to local dogs, cats, pigs and chickens. We take our own shopping bags to avoid using plastic carrier bags. We have fitted oxygenated water taps and showers. Our water is metered and we ask guests to be aware of water conservation. Our toilets have long and short flush options. Water pressure is reduced in the showers. We have a water tank to collect rainwater for watering the garden. Towels are only changed twice weekly and sheets once a week to preserve water. We have put up boxes to encourage birds to nest and rocks and flowers for butterflies and insects. We reused as many materials as possible in our renovation and plan to rebuild another house in our garden using original stone and some of the reclaimed beams we will restore and protect. We have used old roof tiles in our pathway and gravel for our drive and we are rebuilding our boundary wall with original stone. Local guides are always provided at the caves. Guides are not provided on other trips as guests are dropped off and collected at the end of the day leaving them to explore local crafts and restaurants in their own time. In our village we are totally integrated and neighbours love to show our guests wine making and their farm animals. We offer help with their grape harvest in September and ask guests if they would like to help out too. We supply mountain bikes free of charge and encourage guest to cycle or walk the many routes in and around our area. Aromatherapy, reflexology and reiki are also on offer. We also plan to offer canoeing on a local river and sailing on the sea in 2008. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
