description
Hidden away in the heart of the Westcountry not far from the North Devon Coast lies an original holiday experience.
This area boasts 35 acres of unspoilt countryside, offering the opportunity to stay on board a unique houseboat. Each widebeam barge is permanently moored on her own private jetty and sleeps 4 to 6 in ensuite cabins.
Each boat is very private being located over 100 metres apart with their own separate shoreline. Alternatively a large party of up to 10 people may wish to book both boats and reserve the entire site. Both boats have surprisingly spacious galley and salon with plenty of natural light and wood burning stoves.
Experience the joy of waking up to the sound of nature drifting across the water. Watch the busy wildlife right outside the galley window. Land organic rainbow trout for dinner. Be awed by the silent swoop of the barn owl. And in the evening as you watch the sun setting from the aft deck know that it has given its solar energy to power your lighting for the night ahead.

how this holiday makes a difference
We have been awarded the Silver Green Tourism Business Scheme Award. The nature of the houseboat accommodation offers the visitor the unique opportunity to co-exist with nature. The visual impact of the houseboats and the lake are an additional feature to the surrounding area. The boats operate on electricity from solar power, have marine toilets (water efficient), instant hotwater units and a woodburning heat system supplied from site. We make sure that the guests are aware of the solar power system and as such that there is a limited supply depending on the daylight hours. Water on the boat has to pumped off the boat via electric pumps so we ask visitors to keep showers short and not to run taps unnecessarily. We have onsite composting and we have recycling bins for cans, plastics, bottles, glass, newspapers, paper, cardboard. We use Ecover products and leave them for the guests to use. We are encouraging new wildlife such as hunting birds, wetland birds, hare, deer, barn owl, rabbits and voles by planting 13,000 trees, creating a 4 acre lake and wetland, not interfering with the wildlife balance. The lake was developed particularly with conservation areas in mind. Specific areas have islands and marsh bog areas that are not accessible to walkers. We instruct visitors not walk in certain areas and to respect the birdlife especially when there are chicks present. We manage our hedgerows to encourage wildlife. Hedge trimming to a minimum in order to allow a natural habitat for animals and birds. We employ local staff and local agricultural contractors for work such as hedge trimming, topping rushes, land management. We have also employed a local cleaning company. We also encourage guests to shop in the local farmers market. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
