how this holiday makes a difference

The villa was small scale development on land previously use for buildings but abandoned after WW2. The new build villa gets all its hot water from solar power. Electrical appliances are newly purchased and comply with modern standard of energy efficiency. We turn off lights and appliances when not in use. We will fit energy saving light bulbs as soon as we have supplies. Rain water flows into a gully in the garden, in the next stage of landscaping; this will be channelled to irrigate the garden. The garden lights are solar. The villa has tanks and soak aways to process sewage within the land. The villa has showers to reduce water use. We have a laundry scheme where we only change towels and sheets after 7 days.
The garden of the villa is cultivated without the use of pesticides and fertilisers. The house was sited to avoid damage to larger trees. Smaller trees were preserved where possible and the developing garden is a mixture of native trees, fruit trees and flower trees. Hibiscus trees have been planted to encourage the Humming birds. I have left an area of bush at the top of the plot away from the house undisturbed so that wildlife can breed. Beer bottles can be recycled if guests leave them for us and guests can avoid packaging by buying fruit and vegetables from the street market, where you have to take your own bags. The local people repair items, rather than disposing of then and getting new ones. The villa provides work for a manager-housekeeper, grounds man, plumber, electrician, handy-person and additional income for our regular taxi driver and the car hire office. We only provide accommodation, for all else: food, drink, entertainment, shopping, tourist activities and transport, guests go out to the local community. The villa is located within walking distance, 5 minutes by bus from View Fort, where local fruits, vegetable and fish can be bought from the markets and stores. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
