how this holiday makes a difference

The hotel and spa is committed not only to excellence in luxury service and standards, but also to minimising environmental damage and conserving biodiversity. The hotel practices responsible environmental management that reduces, reuses and recycles natural resources. To this end, sound practices of energy and water conservation, air quality and pollution management and reduction, use of environmentally friendly resources, recycling, and environmentally friendly purchasing, in keeping with existing laws and regulations, have been introduced.
A colour code system is used to switch on/off lights on a scheduled basis. A card-key system is in operation in every room to ensure that energy is not used when guests are not in their rooms. Energy saving bulbs have been introduced in some public areas and balconies. Solar heating is used in the Spa. A schedule is maintained and implemented for ensuring optimum performance of all electrical equipment. Polythene curtains have been introduced in cold rooms to minimise heat loss and staff have been trained to minimise opening and shutting refrigerator doors, which increases use of energy. The units of electricity used are monitored closely for changes. Having been affected by the Tsunami of 2004, we embarked on creating shelter for the affected citizens in the area through the our relief fund. The public swimming pool in Galle is another project involving us, Adopt Sri Lanka and SOS VELSEN of Holland. We donated the land for this project and will complete the building of this pool by the end of this year. The aim of this pool is to give the school children of Galle access to swimming lessons which will be conducted free of charge. The pool, the trainers and the maintenance will be the responsibility of the hotel. This year, the project chosen by us is named The Ozone Cap. It is a reforestation project that we will run in and around the Hunas Falls near Kandy. We will link this project to all our hotels in respect of Carbon footprints and credits. The hotel also aims to strengthen community participation by involving the community in as many guest-related activities as is possible. Community awareness programmes have also been introduced to encourage long-term sustainability and consistency. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
