Nicaragua lodge and coffee plantation accommodation

We are an award winning ecolodge, private forest reserve and certified organic, shade grown coffee farm set in a wet tropical forest with 4 nature trails located in the mountainous heart of Nicaragua.

The farm’s high elevation (4000 ft - 1200 m), makes the property a cool, green, and tranquil paradise for travelers seeking beautiful sunsets, a refreshing climate, delicious food, and many activities.

We are a sustainable tourism project in which all earnings stay in the community, promoting a continual source of income for San Ramón and the conservation and restoration of the natural environment.

Our beautiful Nicaragua lodge and coffee plantation has cabins built of hand made brick and other local materials accommodate 26 people. We also offers homestays in the town of San Ramón, for visitors to enjoy time with a typical Nicaraguan family. The guest houses of San Ramón are homes that have flush toilets, sinks, showers and electricity.

There are at least seven reasons visitors come to us for their accommodation:
  • Cultural exchange with the people and community of San Ramón
  • Contribute to the economic development of San Ramón
  • Observe and participate in the cultivation of shade grown, organic coffee
  • Learn about tropical forests and the struggle of subsistence farmers

how this holiday makes a difference
Our Nicaragua lodge and coffee plantation accommodation was created in 1998 by a non-profit organization based in Durham, North Carolina (USA). Its mission: through collaboration between San Ramón, Nicaragua and its partner communities in the United States, SCSRN promotes people-to-people connections and supports social/economic development projects that build friendship, understanding, justice and respect for the Earth.

We are a sustainable tourism project in which all earnings stay in the community, promoting a sustainable source of income for San Ramón and for the conservation and restoration of the natural environment. We dedicate 10% of group and package tour income (not just profits) to community projects. Completed projects include a potable water system for a nearby coffee cooperative community, a new local elementary school and major improvements to the San Ramon municipal water system.

The 100 hectare certified organic farm has 12 hectares of arabica coffee that flourishes under the shade of the farm's extensive tropical forest canopy. Shade grown and organic coffee protects forest habitat and watersheds. The farm is a member of the organic coffee growers’ cooperative where it has organized educational events and developed important markets for San Ramón's shade grown, organic and fair traded coffee in North Carolina and the southeastern US with our partners Counter Culture Coffee and Inter-American Importers.

We are located far from the electrical grid. (You'll marvel at the number of stars you can see). We have expanded our solar electric photovoltaic system and added a small hydro-electric system at the lodge to power two refrigerators. In 2003, we funded a Nicaraguan student engineering group at the national university in Managua, to design and build some prototype, low cost, passive solar hot water heaters for Nicaragua. The prototypes were installed in 2004. Additional solar water heaters will be built in May, 2008 by Appalachian State University Department of Alternative Technology students.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
