description
On his first visit to Transylvania, the Prince of Wales was immediately struck by the precious legacy of this area and said he was “totally overwhelmed by its unique beauty and its extraordinarily rich heritage.”
In 2006, the Prince decided to buy and restore an 18th Century Saxon house in the Transylvanian village of Viscri / Deutschweisskirch, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The buildings have now been sensitively restored, and have a number of Transylvanian antiques. They remain very much in keeping with the surrounding architecture, but with modern facilities where possible for the comfort of guests who wish to explore the unique culture of this forgotten part of Europe.
This traditional farm house consists of two dwelling buildings separated by a large wooden gate, a courtyard with a vegetable patch, a large barn and stables. There are 2 double rooms with one bathroom in one building and one double room with bathroom and a kitchen in the other. The property is simple and unpretentious in its style, reflecting the ancient rural culture of Saxon villages. Local guides are available for culture and food tours in the region or for a series of hikes centered upon Viscri.
The Prince of Wales hopes that his guesthouse in Viscri will encourage more people to visit Transylvania and in this way promote sustainable development.
Walking: A series of hikes are available around Viscri.

rooms, food and facilities
The guest rooms are furnished almost exclusively with antique Saxon Transylvanian furniture. We have taken particular care in making beds and seats comfortable, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.
There are 2 double rooms sharing one bathroom in one building and one double room with bathroom and a kitchen in the other. A maximum of 2 parties can book, one for the 2 rooms sharing, and the other for the en-suite room.
Each room has its own electric kettle, with both tea and coffee provided. The heating system is also original and based on wood-stoves.
Breakfast is served in a picturesque kitchen. Home-made lunch and dinner can be served at villager’s homes across the street, where you might have the opportunity not only to meet the local families but also fellow travellers.
The cuisine is mainly based on products from the village gardens and produced by the villagers. The bread is fresh from the oven. No pesticides or chemical products are being used. The menu contains local dishes, which we feel you will be pleased to discover. You will often have picnics during your trips and hikes and a rich dinner in the evenings. The meat and milk comes mainly from animals raised in the village and on its pastures.
By train: Nearest station - Sighisoara.
Transfers from Bucharest also available.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
We aim at restoring and preserving the historic architectural harmony of the village and its environment. The guest house is part of the village and guests become neighbours to the villagers for the length of their stay. Local guides show our guests the unspoilt nature and lifestyle of the area. This contributes to our efforts in encouraging the villagers to understand why it is so important to preserve it. The small scale of this guesthouse is also beneficial to the promotion of sustainable tourism.
Renovation has been carried out by using the old techniques, with original, hand-made and locally produced building material and by local craftsmen. The building is now in perfect harmony with its architectural and environmental surroundings. Furniture is almost entirely antique and original Saxon. Many of the items to be found in the house originally belonged to its former inhabitants and have been restored by Transylvanian restorers. Activities and the house itself are managed locally with local staff. A stay at the guest house enables a meaningful connection with local people, their traditions, food, and the ancient culture of Saxon Transylvania. Meals offered are of local produce, and directly prepared by families in the village. The guesthouse itself has its own small organic vegetable garden. Proceeds of the guesthouse are entirely re-invested locally in similar projects by the Prince’s Charities |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
