Enjoy our Sicily holiday accommodation in a splendid Mediterranean area
Far away from civilization the warm hospitality of the Barons Coffari di Gilferraro, last descendants of one of the oldest Sicilian feudal families, in what was an ancient family wine production factory, now renovated as a lodge in Mount Etna Nature Park at the foothills of Europe’s largest active volcano. The volcano is presently active with an eruption splendid to see and far enough away to feel and be safe! It is an ideal resort for romantic tranquillity, family vacations, cultural tourism and trekking in Mount Etna Nature Park.
Guests at our Sicily holiday accommodation are hosted in the North and South Wing rooms. The lodge is close to Piedimonte Etneo, a rural village of Sicily not far from Taormina and the Mediterranean Sea. The view stretches from the coast of Calabria, to Taormina and to the seaport Riposto, and to Mount Etna. The beach is 8 km downhill.
Your relaxed hosts are a Viking Ballet Dancer and a Sicilian Chemistry Professor now specialized in preserves. We communicate in Danish, English, French, Italian and with our hands. Having no neighbours you can enjoy the calm and peace the place offers, day and night.
The lodge rises on top of a 3-acre fruit park with trees bearing organic fruit all year round ripening on the naturally fertilized volcanic soil. Thanks to its unique geographical position between the Mediterranean Sea exposed foothills and the very often snow capped Mount Etna our surrounding is blessed by the best microclimate: sun, warmth and heat by day…up to top-less levels in winter (forget about Jan/Feb), fresh to cold by night even in summer from sunset to sunrise because of the inversion of the Mediterranean Sea breeze.
Trekking can range from a very easy level up to a 5-day discovery tour on Mount Etna Active Volcano Nature Reserve. Day trips Mountain climbing Swimming, sun-bathing and cozy dining at the beach Scuba diving and equipment rent at Giardini Hang gliding from the mountains above Letojanni Golf club (18 holes) 8 km away Tennis, basket, soccer, track and field at the village sport centre Dog sledge school (trained dogs and human students) Archaeology and historical cities: Agrigento, Siracusa, Pantalica, Piazza Armerina and Caltagirone Shop and dine in Taormina Enjoy a calm evening in front of the fireplace with the discreet company of three friendly ghosts, or count the stars (big job!)
Mount Etna: Mount Etna is presently active and every day we have a show; it is especially spectacular at night... better than fireworks. It is possible to approach the lava flow with authorised guides (no closer than 200 meters from the erupting mouths because it becomes too dangerous). To see our Etna video and find out more about Etna treks, please enquire.
Walking: Trekking can range from a very easy level up to a 5-day discovery tour on Mount Etna Active Volcano Nature Reserve.
Skiing: Explore the active volcano and it's caves, climb to the top craters or ski at Piano Provenzana 2000 Mt. or higher, 24 km away, with ski lifts and equipment rent.

The bedroom has a double bed and candles, or, if you are not for it, electric lights. The bathrooms are made of two separate chambers: one for the toilet and one with sink, shower and an antique large bathtub that can comfortably accommodate two persons.
The XIIX century North Wing double rooms at the second floor of the Palmento di Gilferraro, where there are three recently renovated cozy double rooms each with bath en suite. The view is toward the Mediterranean Sea or the mountains.
2 hectares of biologically cultivated land with “all the fruit you can eat and take with you” included in the rates, a common room with sitting room facilities and fridge obtained from the transformation a green house, in house restaurant for guests only, the foyer where breakfast and dinner are served for guests only, a deck, a solarium and much more.

how to find our our Sicily holiday accommodation
To reach us by road: Exit the Autostrada A18 CT-ME at Fiumefreddo, go uphill to Piedimonte Etneo, head left towards "Presa-Vena". After the Campo Sportivo (Sport Field), going up-hill for about 300mt you reach the 1st crossing. Do not go left towards Vena-Presa, but keep straight going straight up-hill on a narrow street for 150 meters. Take the first right is via Bassi (indicated!), take it, then first left and up for a couple of hundred meters. how this holiday makes a difference

Presently we operate for the community as an example and as free of charge consulting. Guests of our Sicily holiday accommodation are welcome to pick all the biological fruit they can transform into marmalade and carry away with them. We encourage guests to enjoy the Nature Park by walking and rding our local little train “Ferrovia Circumetnea”, unfortunately we do not have other public transport.
For energy saving we use sanitary water heating with a thermal solar system of my invention. Winter heating is provided by the reduction of heat dispersion and the burning of agriculture shrubs pressed into bricks thus not creating a carbon dioxide load as the material is renewable. We have reached the point that we burn no fossil fuels. We have 250 sq. meters of rain water collection for recycling of grey waters for irrigation and fertilization. Grey waters end up in the irrigation water reservoir (of cement...it already existed) after leaching the ashes of burned wood. So the agricultural water which is supplied by a consortium from springs fed with Etna (3400 meters high) snow melt is enriched with potassium that lacks in volcanic soils and phosphates from soaps. We do not use other fertilizers. Fruit is smaller, but real. We are in an advanced stage of planning for the installation of 120 sq. meters of photovoltaic cells to produce electricity to be inputted in the national grid. We recycle organic matter in compost. We are reducing waste in general by refusing plastic bags and extra wrapping from shops. We support conservation by trying to use the most environmental friendly products. We minimised the impact of the construction by repairing an old construction (built in the 14 hundreds) with traditional local materials, avoiding plastics and cement (as much as possible). Our philosophy is of not being extremists (ex.: lets not ride an electric powered train to demonstrate against a new electric power plant dam or do not cut with a gasoline powered chain saw fire wood) so we conserve as much as reasonable. The materials used at our are lava stone, both ornamental i.e. cut, possibly ancient and by hand, and raw (stone) for construction of walls. Oak beams, cement reduced to less than the minimum and substituted with “calce idraulica” (a traditional very hard material made of plaster and ground terracotta.) Of course the wiring and safety switches are new and at CE standards. The cladding in and out has been done with “sabbia di Palermo” (a ground stone – I believe a sort of sandstone - that mixed with water upon drying synterizes and makes a sort of hard surface). The sinks and bathroom appliances are of ceramic. Walnut and pine wood (which grow on Etna) for windows and flooring. Fireplace made of lava stone. Recycled ancient tiles for pavements. Security of the house with ancient iron gates bought at scrap metal deposits. Hot water for sanitary use is produced by a solar collector of my invention (it will never be on the market because its good, easy to build and cheap). The principle is simple: 700 litres (3 tanks in series) immerged in a hot air thermal solar power oven. No pumps no controls. We have experienced that energy efficient light bulbs have a very short life outdoors, so outside they are not efficient nor purchase cost saving so it is limited to the interior. The area around our our Sicily holiday accommodation is quite wild and there are enormous extensions of Mount Etna Volcano park that are left for wildlife including eagles. We do not plough. We have the fortune and pleasure of having a rare variety of carnivorous plants. Being in agricultural land in the Nature Park of Mount Etna active volcano we produce more than we can use and allow others to collect fresh fruit. We purchase and consume only local organic foodstuff and reduce animal protein to the minimum recommended by our physician. Local personnel is employed (not much: only what is strictly needed) for the care of the land and the cleaning of the lodge. Our place is small, the work is done by my wife Ingrid and I, and the only help we get is in room cleaning and some times on outside work such as rebuilding the ancient water flooding system and dry walls that are becoming too heavy: every year that passes stones get heavier (I am 63). We try with a little success of being of example. The ancient skill we have manage to resuscitate are: dry stone wall building and pressing the grape by dancing on them. The most important difference that the lodge makes is that is passes unnoticed: silent and joyful. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
