how this holiday makes a difference
The village house is a unique house of historical value, originally built around 1830 and recently carefully restored to its original state using authentic traditional materials and craftsmanship. The house is situated in the picturesque and historic village of Tochni. Built exclusively with stone, its unique traditional architectural features have been carefully preserved. We promote local employment by using local people and tradesmen. We preserve traditional heritage by properly restoring and enhancing the traditional architectural features of the house and the area in general, and promote our cultural heritage by providing information to our guests about the nearby archaeological sights of interest (Neolithic settlement), Byzantine monasteries and picturesque traditional villages in the area.

We conserve water by using improved watering system for the plants and flowers of our garden. The system for our plants & flowers includes water distribution with plastic hoses and special sprinklers / drops close to the roots of plants and flowers as to minimize water waste and automatic watering during night time when evaporation is low as to minimize the amount of water needed. We save electricity by using solar energy for heating water and by turning off lights & equipment when are not needed, and we reduce, reuse and recycle wastes. We pay particular attention in keeping the surrounding area in very clean condition. We and our guests promote waste minimisation, and the use of reused or recycled products such as toilet paper, the separation and recycling of waste glass, paper & plastic. We have made also a provision to reuse water from the communal waste water treatment plant.

We do not use pesticides or fertilizers but we use animal manure instead. We feed and water birds and place nets on the plants. We have bird boxes and bat boxes. Our garden is small and mature with a few wild flowers which we preserve. We make known our Environmental Responsibility Policy to our guests by placing a statement together with other significant information in each apartment. We participate in the local council and we are supporting projects that enhance the character and conserve the village old stone built house of 1830. Current projects include the village square and an old community house which are partially financed by EU. The conservation of the cultural heritage of the village is promoted by us and also through the Cyprus Tourist Organisation, creating natural trails and promoting rural tourism. We promote local activities that enhance the character and tradition of the village, and produce maps & other relevant information for our guest about the nature and culture of the area and “things to do and see”.

We run to a high degree a paper free office. We use recycled stationary wherever possible for our needs. We have designated the nearby area of natural beauty as part of “Natura 2000” network and developed natural trails and the guest are informed accordingly.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
