description
Located in the Cotswolds, the heart of rural England, this property is almost 2900 years old and was once Churchill villages' blacksmith. In more recent years it has been converted into the warm and comfortable home it is today, while retaining many of the original features.
Now a comfortable five roomed guest house, all rooms have en-suite baths with showers or a shower room, two are equipped with Jacuzzi style whirlpool baths, three rooms have traditional four-poster beds. The owners philosophy is that 'Green Tourism is a way of life not a product'.
Originally recorded in the Domesday Book as "Cercelle", the charming village of Churchill offers an ideal point from which to explore the Cotswolds. We are ideally located for exploring this beautiful part of the UK. Oxford, Woodstock (for Blenheim Palace), Cheltenham, Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick are also all within easy reach.Walking - Many walks pass popular tourist destinations including Chastleton House. Castles - Cotswolds antiquities to Visit are Broughton Castle, Blenheim Palace and Sudeley Castle. Villages - The villages in The Cotswolds are legendary for their beauty and tranquility. Visit Churchill, Bibury, Burford, Stow-on-the-Wold and Great Tew. Gardens - Some fine examples of rural England can be seen at Barneley House, Hidcote, Kiftsgate, Sezincote and Batsford Arboretum. Curiosities - Visit the Broadway Tower, built in the late 1700's the tower has commanding views and is an easy twenty minute drive from our property. Look out for Gargoyles, strange faces adorning many churches in England and started life as water spouts to drain the roofs and towers. The Rollright Stones are generally regarded as the third most important prehistoric circle in England (after Stonehenge and Avebury) the Rollright stones date back to 1500 BC. For 3500 years Rollright has kept it's secret, it is unknown why they exist. Each visitor counts a different number of stones and no one has actually confirmed the correct number! An eerie site with a mysterious past. Five miles from our property.

We are avid supporters of the Inland Waterways and support many waterway charities. We actively work with the Cotswold Canal Trust, steering their trip boat at Lechlade and manning stands at shows. Involvement in the Step into the Cotwolds – Visitor Stewardship Scheme: The business has actively promoted the Step into the Cotwolds – Visitor Stewardship scheme. The scheme has been designed to raise funding to support access improvements in the Cotswolds undertaken by the Cotswolds Volunteer Wardens. Enhancing Environmental Quality: Our commitment to green tourism includes the:
Contribution to a Sustainable Economy: The business has created web links to all other GTBS accredited businesses in the West Oxfordshire area. We believe in supporting the local trades people and have a local builder who helps maintain our 200 year old property, he has lived in the area all his life and uses his local knowledge to maintain the exterior of our property in keeping with the area. We place great importance on breakfasts at our property, using good quality ingredients and purchasing sausages and bacon from the local butcher in Chipping Norton. We also have an excellent local pub/restaurant which uses local produce and is just across the road so no car is needed, they are so good many of our guests eat with them every night of their stay. We encourage our guests to explore the canals and rivers and take a trip on the River Thames on the charity boat to learn more about our waterways. We have a folder with printed details of of walks which can be taken from our doorstep and local walks which can be accessed by wheelchair users. Our own little village walk takes about an hour and is a good introduction to village life and its history. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
