description
Dordogne self catering cabin sleeping 4_insideThe "Fisherman's cabin" provides the perfect antidote to anyone leading a busy stressful life. It's peaceful surroundings of forests and lakes immediately soothe the soul. The cabin is off-grid. A waterwheel provides green energy to power lights and refrigeration, in combination with solar power and a wood-burning stove to heat water and keep the cabin toasty. The whole ethos of the cabin is to provide a welcoming retreat with minimal impact on the environment. Natural materials have been used to build this little oak-framed cabin. Situated on the bank of it's own lake, nature is all around you.

Ecologically the cabin has a low carbon impact. It's built from locally grown and milled timber, and many reclaimed materials, and mostly furnished with junk shop gems. Waste is recycled and eco-friendly cleaning products are used wherever possible. Fuel for the fire is all from our own woodland.

We provide lots of extras so you can travel light, such as bed linen, a few basic food essentials and organic toiletries.
Selfspecial things to do and see here
You can birdwatch, enjoy the flora and fauna, take walks through the forest or cycle around the pretty local countryside. A visit to the colourful markets in nearby towns is highly recommended to experience the fabulous local produce. If that seems a bit energetic, just relax on the raft and listen to the fish jumping and the frog's chorus. We provide you with guide books, maps and local information on what you might see and do, as well as books, a wind-up radio and art materials for whiling away a rainy day. Bikes are available for hire.

how this holiday makes a difference
Dordogne self catering cabin,_lakeThe Fisherman's cabin has a very low impact on the environment. It's been built using local and reclaimed materials wherever possible, all the furnishings have been bought or made locally, many from second-hand shops. Being off-grid means every watt counts and discourages wasteful use of electricity. The water supply is pumped and filtered from the lake so we appreciate the importance of using water carefully. There's a state of the art composting toilet, and a stop button shower.

One of our aims is to 'showcase' greener energy options and new technologies as well as harking back to simpler times, seeking the perfect combination of a back to nature experience without having to forego modern comforts. We provide plenty of info for our guests about to the local markets, shops and restaurants so they may take advantage of the fabulous local produce and help the local economy. Hassle free bike hire is available, one of the best ways to see the local countryside.

Waste is recycled or composted wherever possible and we use eco-friendly cleaning products. We provide many extras such as basic culinary items, bedding and towels and a small supply of organic toiletries so our visitors can travel lighter.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
