how this holiday makes a difference
The hotel is actively involved in supporting local community. We created the Mustique Charitable Trust in 2008 to support several local charities in St Vincent ranging from children’s hospital, orphanage to education actions with local technical college. The trust also covers education on Mustique (school built by the company) and the medical services provided to staff on Mustique. We also support the Mustique Charitable Trust which was set up by the parent company on the celebration of its 40th anniversary.

Guests are given on arrival all information about the island, its flora and fauna and encouraged to respect the fragile environment of the island – they are also encouraged to explore St Vincent and its rich tropical rain forest and gardens. Most of the staff are local from St Vincent occupying all levels from Rooms Division, Housekeeping, Restaurant & Maintenance – training is regularly made to all staff in keeping with the Leading Hotels of the World minimum standards – this is of great benefit to the staff and gives them basis for then becoming private butlers in one of the many villas on the island or leaving to go and work on cruises ships or other tourism activities in the Caribbean.

The island recycles all waste. As all water is produced on island there is a strong policy to conserve water and guests are made aware of this - gardens are watered with grey water to save water consumption. Electricity is also produced on island so energy saving light bulbs throughout resort – outdoor lights on timers to reduce consumption – A/C only switched on when rooms occupied. The hotel also uses solar power to heat hot water for rooms.

Fauna on island is protected and encouraged to roam around the resort and island. Major landscaping undertaken by company and resort to ensure local plants are used and encouraged to flourish – watering is grey water to save water use. There are two lily ponds on property to encourage local birdlife and treatment against biting insects is deet free and environment friendly. The hotel also has own herb garden producing locally so no need to import from abroad. Our company is responsible for maintaining the whole island and sea up to 100 metres off shore hence protecting the reefs and coral.

A newsletter is produced by our Environmental Committee to draw attention to the islands natural riches such as turtle reproduction, bird life, and bees have recently been introduced to the island to encourage pollination of plants. The office recycles paper and batteries (used in series of items in rooms such as remote controls etc) and special bins provided. The company aims to recycle ˝ of the 7000 tonnes of waste produced each year and a recycling programme is in place for all metals & steel.

98% of staff is local from St Vincent and accommodated and fed on property – several line managers are local and ex-pat managers are limited to General Manager, Assistant Manager and Spa Manager. Nearly all food stuffs come from St Vincent. Concierge gives info on local trips guests can take to explore Grenadines and use services of local boats etc.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
