the amazing things you'll be doing
This fantastic introduction to some of the magnificent habitats that sustain the most famous game animals and predators gives you the opportunity to observe the full spectrum of wildlife, from the big predators to the small mongooses, elephants to guinea-fowl. Visit the extensive grass plains of the Serengeti, the unique wildlife sanctuary of the Ngorongoro Crater, the marshes of Lake Manyara and the savannah of Tarangire. We take you by 4-wheel drive vehicles with specially designed roof hatches which give you access for viewing and photography. The tents are large dome tents and we supply camp beds, bush shower and all meals – prepared for you by our camp staff.
day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | Nairobi/Arusha. Transfer from the frenetic city of Nairobi to Arusha, in the midst of the Great Rift Valley. Tanzania is home to amazing wildlife and spectacular natural sites such as Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and the rolling plains of the Serengeti. |
| Day 2: | Tengeru Homestay. Learn about the life of the Meru as privileged guests at a family homestay. Perhaps explore the nearby markets, learn about Kenyan coffee production or get to know the family's farm. Make local friends and learn first-hand about life on the land. |
| Day 3: | Lake Manyara National Park. Cross the Great Rift Valley floor to Mto Wa Mbu to explore the town's colourful markets. Haggle for handicrafts then continue on to Lake Manyara, known for its unique tree-climbing lions and thriving hippo population. |
| Day 4-5: | Serengeti National Park. Enter the Serengeti, home to large herds of zebras and wildebeest and sleek iconic predators. Spot as many animals as possible on a game drive, then fall asleep amid the calls of nocturnal birds. At dawn, an optional balloon ride over the park offers a chance to watch the animals of the African savannah awaken. |
| Day 6: | Ngorongoro Crater. Visit the fascinating Olduvai Gorge before driving to the crater rim to set up camp. The Ngorongoro Crater is home to a huge animal population so keep an eye out for the Big Five and more. |
| Day 7: | Karatu. Get amongst the action on a half-day game drive along the crater floor. Keep cameras ready for sightings of everything from wildebeest to elephants. With a bit of luck, there might even be a lion closing in for the kill. |
| Day 8: | Nairobi. The adventure ends in Nairobi, where the colourful cultures of Kenya's many tribes and modern life come together. |
travellers' tales
The most memorable part of my holiday was spotting my own Leopard, thanks to our top notch driver/guide who taught us how to look for wildlife... This safari was wonderful and highly recommended. Definitely 5 stars. (more)
small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places. this tourism business won an award

For every week that our passengers spend in Africa, we plant a tree in Kenya through the Woodlands 2000 Trust, a local NGO. The Woodlands 2000 Trust is a wonderful project that provides seeds and seedlings with planting materials as well as land-planning, tree survival and woodlot management services. It aims to increase reforestation and bio-diversify in semi-arid regions, and also to create sustainable and profitable tree products micro-industries that contribute to alleviating poverty.
We believe strongly in low impact tourism and so during this trip we use existing locally owned facilities. By using locally owned and run facilities we are helping the local communities that we visit. We reduce deforestation by avoiding unnecessary use of scarce firewood and using gas for cooking. At Mto Wa Mbu travellers have a chance to interact with the locals in the busy market and can contribute to the local community |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
