the amazing things you'll be doing
This is superb fly-in trip enables you to visit remote Selous Game Reserve bush camps quickly - a good option for those pressed for time. Light aircraft schedlued services run between the parks, reserves and islands. This trip offers you the best of the awesome Selous Game Reserve (42,000 sq. km of wilderness) and a slice of beach paradise that is the Mafia Archipelago. You'll spend three nights at the photogenic Selous Safari Camp is tucked away beside the beautiful Lake Nzelekela, noted for the towering borassus palms that rise from its waters. Herds of game, especially impala, often wander into camp from the reserve to feed.
Approaching from the water, all you see of the camp over the treetops is the tall apex of the main boma, which has been built on stilts to catch the breeze. Your next two nights will spent away from the lodge immersing yourself in the bush and enjoying the wildlife in a comfortable fly-camp.
The final 5 nights will be spent in the Mafia Archipelago - five sleepy tropical islands, clustered together in the Indian Ocean. Though only a 35-minute flight from Dar, these islands are little known and rarely visited. A highlight of your trip will be 5 nights at the remarkable Chole Mjini Lodge. It has no fence around it, and simply merges with the village. Six tree-houses stand on stilts, high up in baobab trees. From your tree-top, you look over the mangroves to the sea beyond. Bathrooms, at the base of the trees, have shared compost toilets and romantic open-air showers with plenty of hot water. In the main boma you will find large comfy cushions for relaxing on, many games, novels, reference books and a central table for dining.

travellers' tales
Fly camping on the edge of Lake Tagalala was one of the many highlights; being woken by hyenas at 2 in the morning certainly makes a change (of sorts) from Clapham. (more)

|
This Selous Game Reserve & Mafia Island holiday involves 5 nights at the remarkable Chole Mjini Lodge. The lodge has been set up as a partnership between researchers Jean and Anne de Villiers and the people of Chole Mjini. It aims to promote tourism and directly benefit the local community - and it succeeds.A significant proportion of the revenue received for every guest goes towards community development projects. So far this has facilitated the building of a kindergarten, school and small hospital, and there are more projects in progress.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
