the amazing things you'll be doing
This is the Jurassic Park of the Windward Islands and a botanist's paradise. Its towering volcanic interior is host to a huge variety of trees, orchids and other plant life.

This is also a firm favourite for birdwatchers and the critically endangered Sisserou and Jacqout parrots can be seen in the north of the island. The island's scenery is stunning with mountains plunging deep into the Caribbean to the west and the Atlantic to the east.

Volcanic activity is still apparent in the islands hot springs and the Boiling Lake, which is the second largest of its kind in the world and well worth the long and muddy trek to see. Dominica is a mecca for hikers with plenty of jungle trails that invariably seem to end in cascading waterfalls or splendid views. The dramatic scenery continues underwater and Dominica has developed a reputation as one of the Caribbean's top dive destinations.

Whales and dolphins are seen off the coast for much of the year and whale watching trips are easily arranged.

There is little development on Dominica, even the capital Roseau is a sleepy little town that seems to be clinging onto one of the only flat areas on the island (don't expect any golf courses) and the hotels, lodges and guesthouses we use here are typically small, intimate, often family run and almost invariably are beautifully located with spectacular views. English is the official language of Dominica spoken with a wonderfully infectious East Caribbean drawl.

This is a trip designed to introduce you to the wide variety of Dominican flora and fauna. You will be staying in a variety of mountain, coastal and jungle accommodation with a few days in Roseau to catch up on the island gossip and visit the botanical gardens.

(Please note we are a UK based company and are only able to help with flight arrangements from the UK.)
best time to go
The dry season is from November to the end of April. May can often be a good time to go as it is the end of the season and much quieter but it is very hot and humid. The rainy season starts at the beginning of June through to October. It does not rain all day but often clouds over at lunchtime and there are downpours in the afternoon. There is a risk of hurricane during August, September and October in the Caribbean and the Caribbean coasts of Central America.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1-5:Northern Dominica (4N) BB Fly from the UK to Dominica via either Antigua or Barbados. Transfer on arrival along the coast to either Castle Bruce or the small village of Calibishie to begin the winding down process in a tranquil, hillside inn overlooking the rugged Atlantic coast. A small 4x4 will be delivered to you at the hotel on the morning of day 3.
Day 6-8:Laudat (3N) BB Head across to the Caribbean coast and then up into rainforest that blankets the slopes of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Your stay will be in a rainforest inn, which is a great base for exploring the trails, lakes, waterfalls and sulphur springs that litter this area.
Day 9-11:Roseau (3N) BB Drive back to the Caribbean coast for a 3 night stay in the islands small capital where you can visit the museum, markets and botanical gardens as well as enjoying the islands best selection of restaurants, shops and bars.
Day 12-15:Southern Dominica (4N) RO Finally make your way to either a tranquil cliff-top retreat on the south coast that overlooks Grand Bay and the Martinique Channel or an award winning eco-retreat tucked away in a lush rain-forested valley in the south-east. Plenty of walking and snorkelling opportunities or simply soak up the great views and warm hospitality before taking an overnight flight home.
Day 16:Arrive UK
travellers' tales
The highlight was the (strenuous) trek to Boiling Lake. Staying at the Eco-lodge in the rainforest (not normally included in the holiday package, but will be from now on!)  (more)
tailor made holiday
This trip can be tailormade to create a unique holiday for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. It is a more luxurious trip that will suit those who enjoy immersing themselves in new cultures and environments before relaxing in comfort in some of the best and most characterful local accommodation! Quality and value are the hallmark of these trips.
how this holiday makes a difference
As a destination Dominica is ideal for the eco-minded tourist. There is very little development - there are no all-inclusive hotel resorts, theme parks or golf courses. Guesthouses, hotels and lodges are typically small and locally run. Guides are born and bred on the island. Food is locally produced, as is the beer. The Dominican’s idea of nightlife is a spontaneous barbecue on the streets of Roseau!

The island is full of undisturbed nature, uncontaminated natural areas and ideal for those with specific interest in studying, and admiring, enjoying the scenery. The employment created through tourism is certainly helping the economy of this island – with the local people benefiting directly.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
