14 days Beijing to Hong Kong

Beijing, Forbidden City, Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, Yangshuo, Hong Kong

A relaxed journey taking in the highlights of a vast and beautiful country.

Experience all the imperial relics of Beijing, archaeological wonders of multicultural Xi'an, the stunning natural playground of Yangshuo and the vibrant markets of Hong Kong.

Incorporating some great activities for the kids, this trip makes for a fabulous family adventure.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1-5:Beijing. There's is so much to see in Beijing and so many ways to see it! Hire a bike and join the locals as they ride through the city, or shop in the intricate maze of city markets. Jump on a rickshaw for a tour of the old style alleyways and courthouses of the hutongs, explore Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City and take a walk along the incredible Great Wall of China.
Day 6-8:Xi'an. Imagine thousands of ancient stone soldiers all standing in battle formation ready to protect their emperor. These are the Terracotta Warriors who have stood to attention in Xi'an for 2,000 years. There are many other attractions in this fascinating city. Escape the hustle and bustle in the serene Great Mosque, watch the sunset from atop the enormous city walls and nibble on delicious food from the evening markets.
Day 9-12:Yangshuo. Towering limestone peaks rise majestically from lush surroundings in this picture-postcard area of southern China. Explore the magical countryside by bike, learn the craft of Chinese cooking, try your hand at calligraphy or take a boat ride along the Li River.
Day 13-14:Hong Kong. Vibrant Hong Kong is jam-packed with things to do - take a tram up Victoria Peak for panoramic city views, enjoy a harbour cruise or explore some of the excellent interactive museums. There is an option to visit the nearby Ocean Fun Park and latest Disneyland or head over to Stanley Market to pick up some silk or handicraft mementos of this fantastic Chinese experience.
travellers' tales
The guides in each city were excellent, and the group guide Lucy was just tremendous - excellent ambassador for both the tour operator and China! The kids really enjoyed it and got to see some things that exposed them how other people live just to survive.  (more)
small group family holiday
This is a 'small group family adventure' - typically you will join several other families and travel in a group of approx. 16 people. The trips are great value and a great way for you and your children to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of time to yourselves. Most adventure kids tend to be aged between 7 and 15, but some are younger (minimum age is usually 5) and some older (perhaps travelling as part of a larger family group). Please check with the operator to confirm the minimum age for this trip
highly commended
This tourism business was Highly Commended in our 2007 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - the largest awards of their kind in the world, and organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Times, World Travel Market and Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.

how this holiday makes a difference
This trip provides a wonderful opportunity for your kids to discover the unique cultures of China, to celebrate and respect cultural differences, and to learn to travel responsibly and respectfully. This trip takes in major highlights of China, but ensures that our small group treads lightly and leaves only their footprints on this remarkable and spectacular country.

While travelling in China we encourage all travellers to learn about and show respect for cultural differences. Small groups assist this process and allow for greater interaction with local people. In true Intrepid style we travel by local transport to enable travellers to experience cultures at first hand, offering greater opportunity for cross-cultural understanding. Your leader and the local guides we use along the way will help to break down your interactions with local people.

There are a number of other basic ways in which Intrepid tries to minimise travellers' impacts such as implementing waste reduction practices. Reusing plastic bags, water bottles and using our own set of chopsticks (instead of disposable ones). At the end of our journey travellers may donate any unwanted clothing, medicine and bandages, which are distributed to appropriate local charities.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
