the amazing things you'll be doing

These trips are suitable for anyone of average fitness, limited experience or just wanting to walk at an easy pace. The maximum distance covered on any one day is 10 miles with little ascent or descent.

Many of these choice routes visit overlooked or less well-known reaches of mountain sanctuaries for unique and dramatic views.
Each holiday has a grade which reflects the distance, underfoot conditions and gradients encountered during the day. Opportunity is made for photography and regular breaks.

The grades are a general guide but if you have any queries whatsoever on the suitability of a particular holiday please don't hesitate to contact us to discuss the options. You should be in good general health.

We limit our walking groups to a maximum of 8 people (plus guide) to optimise the superb experience. On courses the maximum number of clients per instructor varies between 2 and 8 - refer to the course details. Singles, couples and friends of all ages & walks of life come on our holidays enjoying the friendly and very informal atmosphere. Many guests return yearly, some within the same season. All holidays and courses include all accommodation and full board Transport between Fraoch Lodge and the start/finish of the day's route, along with guiding of course, is also included, if required.

Fruits of the Forest - Introductory Walking
From £204 (3 days) ex flights, departing 26 Sep 2008
Walking in the Cairngorm National Park - you'll pass through some of Britain's finest habitats. From wooded glades of pine & birch to croft fields, from beautiful lochs to open moorland, all with a mountain backdrop. Sample the profusion of edible wild mushrooms & berries - the finest foraging in Europe!

The following trips are suitable for fit novices or anyone who takes regular aerobic exercise as well as for regular walkers and hikers. Involves some steeper terrain.

Addictive Arran - Strenuous Walking
From £551 (5 days) ex flights, departing 3 May 2009 details available on request
Spectacular mountain scenery from your experience on Arran - Scotland in miniature. This is mountain walking for the connoisseur. Arran's granite mountains are some of the most spectacular in Scotland. Shapely peaks & jagged ridges provide extremely entertaining, and all in an island setting with views stretching to the distant mainland ranges.

Wild Knoydart - Moderate Walking
From £653 (8 days) ex flights, departing May 2009 details available on request
The remote & rugged Knoydart peninsular is a very special place. For many, it epitomises west highland beauty; mountain after mountain plunging to deep dark serpentine lochs. Accessible only by boat (our mode) or long walk-ins, its one of the most isolated parts of mainland Britain. Its reputation is thoroughly deserved.

Highland extravaganza - Moderate Walking
From £511 (7 days) ex flights, departing May 2009 details available on request
From Loch Ness in the north to Atholl in the south; the Cairngorms in the east to Lochaber in the west, this holiday samples the Highlands’ very varied mountain-scapes and is an ideal introduction to mountain walking in Scotland.

Bothy Solitude Expedition - Wilderness trekking
From £386 (3 days) ex flights, departs Jun
This is the ultimate in escapism: no phones, no faxes, no deadlines, no nothing; just a 4 hr walk to the nearest road! Our base is Scotland’s newest & finest bothy - we’re sworn to secrecy but it’s loch shore setting is below one of Scotland’s grandest and remotest north faces. The view is dominated by An Sgurr, a towering bastion joined by a fine arete. After the walk-in we climb Seana Bhraidh via An Sgurr (day 2) before a superb mountain wilderness walk on the 3rd day. If you’re after isolation in a fantastic mountain.

Complete Cairngorms - Moderate Walking
From £481 (7 days) ex flights, departing 10 Aug 2008
Explore Britain’s most natural landscape: the Great Forest of Caledon with its noble pines, the mighty Cairngorms with their tundra flora, the expansive heather moors. The habitats are rich - you will experience the full variety of this unique mountain area.

Glens, Forests and Lochs - Introductory Walking
From £481 (7 days) ex flights, departing 17 Aug 2008
Immerse yourself in some of the finest habitats & views. This is walking through wild lands where little appears to have changed since the forests chased back the glaciers.

The empty quarter - Strenuous Walking
From £618 (8 days) ex flights, departing 4 Oct 2008
Empty of people, maybe, but not of hillwalking interest. This is the very distinctive wilderness of Assynt and NW Sutherland, where the superlatives really start to flow - ‘island mountains’ rising abruptly from a vast lochpitted tableland. The sense of space is superb. We could go on but to say these are the most eye-catching of mountains with fantastic walking.

Northern hi-lights weekends - Introductory Walking
From GB £199 (3 days) ex flights, departing 17 Oct 2008
Fantastic mountain walking, beautiful scenery, delicious food, a badger watch supping mulled wine & the Aurora Borialis!! What more could you want! Well, we may not be able to guarantee the latter item but they’re a lot more common than you might expect. We do a 6hr mountain walk on the Sat to be followed by a 5 hr one to allow you to return home in good time on the Sunday.

Cairngorm Traverses - Strenuous Walking
From £414 (4 days) ex flights, departing October 2009 dates available on request
We trace the natural lines of the Cairngorm Massif: high plateau brink, mountain ridge, skyline traverse, we follow them all starting and finishing at different locations. We make high traverses of Braeriach, Cairngorm, the Sgoran Ridge and the Kinkardine hills.

how this holiday makes a difference
On all our holidays we have a 'leave nothing, take only photographs' policy. Our guides are asked to explain and encourage this policy. For example, leaving an apple core or feeding a seagull on a mountain summit may seem innocuous but it detracts from the 'untouched wilderness' aspect and can have a detrimental knock-on effect e.g. on the indigenous wildlife. Our guides are not only there for our clients safety & enjoyment but also to informally share their knowledge of the mountain environment - from its geological beginnings and natural history through to contemporary land management and its associated politics. We also like to convey an appreciation of the close interrelationship and intricacies between the geology, natural environment and the socio-economic aspects, past and present.

As part of our continuing commitment to environmentally responsible holidays we are currently in the process of installing a wood pellet boiler here at the lodge (our main base for our walking holidays) here in Scotland.

Along with the history we also like to convey the contemporary opportunities and pressures facing the area both environmental & socio-economic e.g. the detrimental effect of second home ownership.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
