the amazing things you'll be doing
For river junkies, this has to be one of the greatest activity weekends anywhere in the world. A full-on 4 days featuring 5 watersports in and around one of the most beautiful, yet least known, rivers in Europe.

This short break is a pure adrenaline fix with fantastic activities, superb scenery and the warmest of Slovenian welcomes.

Accommodation: Our base for this holiday is the Hotel Krn ideally situated in the very centre of Tolmin, the largest town in the Soca Valley. The hotel has very comfortable and spacious en-suite bedrooms with twins, doubles, triples and quads all available.

We have most of our meals at the hotel which provides a good range of dishes using local produce. There is also a large bar area with a wide range of wines and beers and not forgetting the three huge jars of home-made schnapps on the counter - blueberry, apricot and prune. Don't leave without trying all three!
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Arrival, introduction & night canoeing. Transfers from Trieste Airport to your accommodation where an introductory meeting and dinner are followed by night canoeing. We follow a gentle 4km stretch of river in inflatable kayaks with only the stars in the Slovenian night sky to light our way. Watch out for shooting stars, the record on this descent is 10.
Day 2:Rafting & hydrospeeding. What better way to explore one of the most beautiful rivers in the world? Upstream, where the rapids are gentler, we introduce a few games between rafts before the serious work starts further downstream. There will be little time to admire the towering peaks of the Julian Alps as we negotiate the fast, white water rapids of the Soca. After lunch, we take to the river again for the most extreme activity of the weekend. Hydrospeeding has been described as “descending the river on a tea tray”. This is you and the river up close and personal. It’s sheer breathless adrenaline from start to finish.
Day 3:Kayaking & canyoning. Kayaking can be seriously addictive and there can be few better ways of discovering any river than under your own steam. After some initial tuition we will try a descent of a grade I & II stretch of the River Soca. It’s heaven! Following lunch we head for the Trebusa Canyon where we have sole access rights. After a 20 minute uphill walk to our start point we descend the canyon via a series of slides, jumps, ducks and dives culminating in an exhilarating rope-assisted descent of a 27m waterfall. The conversation at this evening’s farewell dinner will undoubtedly be fuelled with extreme feats of derring-do!
Day 4:Free day & departure. Return to Trieste Airport.
how this holiday makes a difference
The area of The Soca Valley is a superb example of local people working together to ensure that the local environment, which is the lifeblood of their economy, is protected against the influx of mass tourism. The River Soca is so clean that you can simply drink from its clear waters without fear. Building is strictly controlled and there is only one hotel in the town of Tolmin, which by definition regulates the amount of tourism which the area sustains annually.

The Zavadlav Family own and run The Hotel Krn in the centre of Tolmin. All staff are from the town itself, all produce is sourced locally and the hotel promotes recycling of produce wherever possible and encourages guests equally to do so. Furthermore the hotel stimulates the local economy further by promoting local wines and spirits which would not normally find a commercial outlet.

In Slovenia we actively encourage the development of the training of local guides who receive their diplomas from the University of Ljubljana. Our presence allows these guides to develop their international language skills through constant interaction with our groups.

Tolmin itself lies on the edge of the Triglav National Park and taking clients there on one activity day we educate them in how tourism can impact on the ecology of the region if not managed carefully.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
