the amazing things you'll be doing
This extraordinary Andes to Amazon multi-activity adventure will take you from the shores of Lake Titicaca through the Andes and into the vast jungle and savannah of the Amazon and Parana basins.
This unique journey is truly amazing. After arriving in the Bolivian capital La Paz, the trip begins with an exploration by kayak of Lake Titicaca and the Islands of the Sun and Moon.
Traveling back through La Paz, you’ll then embark on a fabulous seven day trek into the Cordillera Real, passing through remote valleys and crossing the spine of the Andes into the warm and humid jungle of the Yungas region.
All of these inspiring landscapes are largely inhabited by indigenous people whose Aymara and Quechua cultures will provide a memorable aspect of your visit. Once in the Yungas, you’ll have a day’s rest in the tranquil town of Coroico, before journeying deep into the Amazon jungle, travelling by dugout canoe to Madidi National Park, an extraordinary ecosystem which is home to more than 1,000 species of birds (ten per cent of the world’s species) and nearly half of South America’s mammal species.
You’ll stay in a superb rainforest lodge with ample opportunity for guided walks through the jungle, before returning to La Paz and home. Quite simply, this trip provides an incredible range of unforgettable experiences of Bolivia and the South American continent.

day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | Arrive La Paz. You’ll see your first sight of the Andes as you fly into El Alto – at 4000 metres the highest international airport in the world. After being met by your Wilderness Journeys guide, you’ll be taken to your hotel in downtown La Paz. |
| Day 2-4: | Lake Titicaca. Your journey begins with the opportunity to kayak on Lake Titicaca, the largest lake in South America. You’ll get to explore Isla del Sol and the historic lakeside town of Copacabana whilst camping beneath the stars of the southern hemisphere. These few days are ideal to acclimatise to the altitude and the challenge of trekking in the Andes, clearly visible from the lake. |
| Day 5-11: | Condoriri to Coroico. This phase sees you cross the spine of the Andes, from the clear, crisp west to the warm and humid east. Safely guided by our expert local guides, we will travel from camp to camp, with awesome views of Mt Huayna Potosi and the chance to experience little-visited valleys. This is trekking in Bolivia at its finest. After some superb days, we will descend to a road, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us to the beautiful town of Coroico. |
| Day 12: | Coroico. A well-earned day of rest. |
| Day 13-17: | Guanay to Madidi National Park. Into the Amazon jungle! Today we’ll head deeper into the jungle, travelling through the Yungas to the River Beni. From here we’ll get into dugout canoes and, heading downriver, see spectacular wildlife from caimans to river dolphins as we pass through deep gorges on our way to Rurrenabaque. We travel onwards by dugouts to the community-owned Chalalan Ecolodge in Madid National Park where we can explore the rainforest by foot. In this amazing environment we can see brown capuchin and squirrel monkeys and vast a array of bird life including macaws, toucans and guans. If we are lucky we may even come across herds of white-lipped peccary or tapirs. |
| Day 18: | Fly to La Paz. From Chalalan it’s a relatively short trip by canoe to Rurrenabaque where we catch a flight back to La Paz, looking down on the Andes below. |
| Day 19: | A day free, followed by a farewell dinner. |
| Day 20: | Depart La Paz |

how this holiday makes a difference
|
Traveling by human-powered means is an inherently sustainable activity and is undoubtedly the best way to travel through any landscape. Here we will be using kayaks to explore Lake Titicaca and will be traveling through the Andes on foot.
This trip supports a wide range of local businesses from our guides to locally-owned small hotels and the communities which we visit. In particular, by traveling to some of Bolivia’s least-visited areas, we are spreading the benefit of tourism to wild areas and emphasising the economic importance of protected area networks. Responsibility to the communities, economies and environments in which we operate has always been and will continue to be at the very core of our business. To help you decide which company you would like to travel with, we have devised a straightforward statement on Responsible Tourism, clearly explaining what our policies mean in practice which can be viewed on our website. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
