the amazing things you'll be doing
The East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak occupy the north-west coast of the island of Borneo.

Together they are larger than the whole of Peninsular Malaysia, and its people have a very different heritage. Their roots stretch back some 40,000 years.

Sabah is a destination with something for everyone: the World’s oldest rainforests, beautiful sandy beaches, unique flora & fauna, breathtaking mountain scenery, world-class hotels, delicious food, fascinating river cruises, and of course a range of loveable apes!

Situated off the north west coast of Malaysia lie 103 sparsely populated islands, with nothing to offer but deserted beaches, coves rich in coral and marine life, dense virgin jungle, fishing kampungs and exotic birds and butterflies. One of these islands is popular Langkawi - there may not be many sights to see but the scenery, especially on the north coast, is spectacular. This is the perfect place for a quiet relaxing holiday.

Best time to go: Year round. Rainfall can occur at any time of the year, but the weather in Borneo is most unsettled between November and February

how this holiday makes a difference
On this tour, you will visit the famous Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah, founded in 1964, to rehabilitate orphan orang-utans. The site is 43 square kilometres of protected land at the edge of Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve. Today approximately 60-80 orang-utans are living free in the reserve.

The facility provides medical care for orphaned and confiscated orang-utans as well as dozens of other wildlife species. Some of the other animals which end up being treated at the centre include:- sun bears, gibbons, Sumatran rhinos and the occasional injured elephants.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a founding member of the Asia Pacific Hotels Environmental Initiative. In accordance with the Group's environmental policy, all Shangri-La and Traders hotels have "Green Programs" to identify ways to reduce wastage, eradicate practices that damage the environment and generally promote environmental awareness.

La Tanjung Aru Resort has received ISO 14001 certification.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
