the amazing things you'll be doing
Choose from several options to create a holiday that includes 3 days traditional/ecological skills, 1 day free (or optional guided walk), 2 days learning a second traditional/ecological skill. Apart from the suggested options, we can also provide tailored packages for groups throughout the year, which may include 3 or 4 days skills training plus 2 or 3 days guided walking along part of the East Clare Way walking route.

Possible skills include basket weaving, coppersmithing, wood carving, eco-building skills (dry-stone walling/uses of lime/cob and cordwood), stone carving and clay sculpture, silversmithing, herb-lore, spinning and weaving, blacksmithing, sugan chair making with an option of woodcrafts (8 - 14 yrs) for the August week.

In your free time, you could take a trip to The Burren, Connemara or Kerry - all within easy reach. East Clare itself has much to see and do - visit the 6th century monastic site of Inis Cealtra (Holy Island) in Lough Derg, or beautiful Lough Graney where 18th century poet Brian Merriman ran his "hedge school" and was inspired to write his epic poem "The Midnight Court", or the ancient lake settlement of Craggaunowen with its reconstructed round-houses.

East Clare is renowned for its traditional music and we can recommend sessions in local pubs for your entertainment. There are also festivals of arts, music, drama in different towns and villages around the region throughout the summer.

how this holiday makes a difference
These holidays offer an opportunity to mix enjoyment of the local heritage and culture with actual hands-on learning of traditional skills from a local craftsperson. The theme is sustainable living and visitors can learn a skill such as blacksmithing, coppersmithing, basketry, herb lore, eco-building, silversmithing, wood carving or sugan chair making (those lovely old-fashioned chairs with woven string seats). The tutors use locally sourced materials - either natural or recycled - and there is plenty of one-to-one tuition to help beginners as well as improvers.

The other part of the holiday involves walking amongst the beautiful scenic hills, woodlands and lakes of East Clare. Trained guides Andrew or Bob will help you discover the rich heritage of the region and will explain the ecology, history and geology that we do our best to care for - with the help of income from the holidays which goes towards local education and training programmes in environmental conservation and sustainable living. There is also the unmissable opportunity to enjoy a local traditional music session in one of the many music pubs for which this region is renowned.

Accommodation is locally owned and selected for using good environmental practices such as recycling, composting and use of eco-friendly cleaning materials and we use only locally sourced materials, organic produce and transport. Course fees go towards local education and training programmes in environmental conservation and sustainable living. Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
