Croatia walking holiday, Dubrovnik escape
Walking and trekking holiday in Dubrovnik and the surrounding area including day trips to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The base for these trips is Cavat, village Radovcici in Konavle and Dubrovnik. During the 7 days we spend 1 night in the medieval town Cavtat, 1 night in typical Konavle village Radovcici and the last 5 nights in Dubrovnik town.

Besides walking activities, this trip offers possibilities to explore many interesting cultural and archeological sights, and to taste and enjoy traditional food and family hospitality.

Routes pass through interesting landscapes from Konavle country side hills and villages to the narrow streets of the Dubrovnik Old Town with paths between olive trees and hills on island Sipan to the channels of cave Vjetrenica. You will also pass by cultural, archeological sights and landscapes where nature and history combine in a perfect setting.

Best time to go: Spring and Autumn
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Arrival. After your arrival in Dubrovnik airport you will be transferred to your accommodation in the town of Cavtat. In the evening welcome dinner with other travelers in the group.
Day 2:Dubrovnik country side Konavle - trekking. After breakfast we start our trekking tour from Cavtat, we follow the path above cliffs, through forest, vineyards and fields of Konavle. On our way we visit many interesting spots and we walking by many old villages, from Cilipi to last village Radovcici. This night we sleep in village Radovcici with a family, upon arrival we have lunch, afternoon on your own, dinner is served at the family home too. The first day we walk max. 15 kilometers, 6 hours moderate walking.
Day 3:Konavle countryside – Mount Snjeznica. After breakfast we leave village Radovcici and we continue to the region of the Konavle hills. We leave our minibus in village Kuna where we start our trekking tour to the highest peak in the Dubrovnik region (1234 m). Trekking length is 5 hours, after picnic lunch in the mountain we return to village Kuna from where we have a transfer to our next destination, Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik is our base for next 5 days.
Day 4:Dubrovnik sightseeing and walking tour. We visit and explore old town of Dubrovnik. Our Dubrovnik exploring starts after breakfast with a short walking tour from our Dubrovnik accommodation to the old centre. There we meet our guide who will take us through Dubrovnik’s streets and introduce us to it's rich history. Tour length is 2 hours combining cultural sightseeing and easy walking.
Day 5:Island Sipan – trekking. On our second day in Dubrovnik we discover the Island of Sipan. To explore and to enjoy Dubrovnik it is necessary to go toward the sea, to the Elaphite Island Sipan. Sipan is a fisherman’s island dating from ancient times. In the middle age Sipan was a summer residence of Dubrovnik’s patricians. Today, many traces, monuments, castles and churches are witness of his history. In combination with green Mediterranean vegetation and with just a couple of cars on the island, Sipan is a perfect destination for walking. Our tour begins after breakfast, we walk from our accommodation to port of Gruz where we board the boat to Sipan. The morning walk starts at Sudjuradj. Inland we will have lunch in local tavern and free time on your own before departure to Dubrovnik. Moderate hiking and trekking length is 3.5 hours.
Day 6:Cave Vjetrenica village Zavala, Herzegovina. Trip to Herzegovina to visit UNESCO protected cave Vjetrenica, in village Zavala. The main characteristic of Vjetrenica is cold wind coming from its entrance. This extensive cave system has in total over 6 kilometers of channels but touristy path is 600 m long. The cave is also home to many small lakes and endemic types of shellfish. Trip starts after breakfast with bus transfer, driving through interesting Herzegovina landscape, which takes one and half hour. Visiting cave takes approximately one hour, after sightseeing departure to Dubrovnik.
Day 7:Free day to relax on your own.
Day 8:Transfer to the airport and departure.
how this holiday makes a difference
We travel in small groups (up to 16) and use many services of local people such as accommodation, transfer services, small family run restaurants which serve domestic food and beverages. We employ local staff and we indirectly support people to stay in rural areas. Through our trips we encourage our guests to buy local hand made souvenirs and to buy locally grown products such as herbs, brandy, wine, cheese, honey etc.

Benefits from our presence in the environment are very positive because we always try to give much more than we get. We invest in the environment, local people and community on this trip particularly by helping the local community in Konavle countryside (or on island Sipan) to stay there and benefits from their rural way of life. In Dubrovnik Old town we pay fees and tickets and percentage of prices support conservations of cultural and archeological sights. In cave Vjetrenica and village Zavala we support conservations of the cave and cave biodiversity system.

We use recycled paper. We recycle all our waste paper (brochures, etc). Our correspondence and promotion is carried out via the internet and email, minimizing the amount of paper used for our activities. We support different local ecological associations and our staff was directly involved in afforestation (planting of pine trees in Dubrovnik area after fire disaster in summer 2007). Besides this afforestation during autumn 2008 and a couple of seasons before, we directly support and we are involved in the ecological action of cleaning the sea. This underwater cleaning is ecological action which is support by local diving centers and fisherman's associations. The planting trees and underwater cleaning are ecological actions which we have supported for many years; moreover I am one of founders of this ecological association.

Croatia multi activity holiday, caveWe encourage travellers to be more responsible with water waste, and we inform all our travellers before their tour about area, especially travelers on tours when they are in protected areas, sea or countryside. We inform travellers about local cultures and habits, we inform our travellers that leaving litter in the sea or beach could have very negative consequences to the fish, sea ecosystem and finally themselves.

We inform travellers to be very careful with fire and to avoid open fire during summer, if they would like to go on fishing we suggest them to go with some local fishermen, if they go scuba diving we inform them about diving clubs which will take them to underwater archaeological sights which are protected and conserved. During their diving or snorkelling it is not allowed to take away anything from the sea except feeling good.

As the transportation is very important in tourism, we support the idea of green transport; cleaner vehicle options which helps area to stay cleaner. We encourage our clients to use public transport and bikes especially when they are on the Islands. We encourage our clients to choose kayaking rather then boat excursions, walking rather than coaching tours and sailing rather then speed boats etc.

All our guides are local and we train our staff to be more responsible for the local environment and ecology. We buy local products as the souvenirs for our partners and we encourage our guests to buy local products. We use local services as much as we can. For restaurants we always choose restaurants with character (mostly family run restaurants with local specialities). On all our tours we use local produce and provide local-style meals, and we encourage our guests to try local dishes and delicacies. We use a lot of locally owned accommodation and this provides direct income for local house owners.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
