the amazing things you'll be doing
Overcoming a turbulent past, Cambodia is now welcoming visitors with open arms and this itinerary will provide you with everlasting memories of this varied and fascinating country. It also offers a great opportunity for interacting with local people, as one of most memorable things about Cambodia is the friendly and smiling people.
Starting in Siem Reap you can visit some of the magnificent temples of Angkor. The complex of Angkor is the famous 'lost city' of the Khmers and the impressive temples range from the giant and imposing structure of Angkor Wat to the jungle covered Ta Prohm. From Siem Reap you travel by road to the town of Battambang; this road journey certainly counts as travelling 'off the beaten track' with the first part of the road being not much more than dirt road. In Battambang you can see the French influence with colonial buildings lining the river.
Moving onwards you travel to the capital city of Phnom Penh, which is rich in cultural and historical sights. The city lies beautifully at the confluence of three rivers and a drink at the 'Foreign Correspondents Club' overlooking the river is the perfect place to watch the sun set. Travelling by road you head south for the seaside town of Sihanoukville. The unspoilt beaches and the quiet town make for an ideal setting to relax for your last few days.

The Hotel De La Paix is a contemporary 5* hotel with a great location close to the town. The hotel supports its sister hotel that trains underprivileged young Cambodian people in the hospitality industry.
In Siem Reap a visit to the Landmine museum helps educate visitors about landmines and the effect they can have, it also supports continuing efforts to clear landmines. Having lunch at the Fresh Eats Cafe is a great way to eat for a good cause! Funds generated from this simple cafe go towards supporting the Homelands orphanage located on the outskirts of the town. The 'For the Smile of a Child' project is an excellent and positive initiative that provides education and vocational training to children living in extremely poor conditions next to the city rubbish dump. Previously these children were forced to collect rubbish from the dump in order to make some money for food. This project means they can receive education, health care, vocational training, food and rice for their families. When visiting the project, you can have lunch at the restaurant which not only helps fund the project but is also a training place for the young people doing hospitality training. Having a tour of project area you can see how the money raised has been used, if you wish you can also visit the dump itself to see the conditions the children live in. Friends restaurant not only serves fantastic food it is also a training institute for underprivileged children in Phnom Penh, so by eating here you are supporting an excellent project. Waiting staff greet you with smiling faces and their t-shirts indicate whether they are a student or teacher. Knowing you will leave wanting to eat their food again, you can purchase Friends recipe books, where the profits go towards supporting the project. In Sihanoukville we recommend eating at the Starfish Bakery. The bakery is linked to the Starfish project which aims to involve disabled people in the local community and to help disabled individuals to help themselves, eating here is an excellent way to donate to the local community. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
